Seeking Justice for Advocate Rajesh Suri: A Decade

Advocate Rajesh Suri, a fearless whistle-blower and dedicated advocate against corruption, exposed numerous high-profile scams involving the misuse of public funds and government land during his career. His relentless efforts uncovered significant scams, including:

Judge Quarter Scam: Government land was fraudulently sold to the judiciary, resulting in a loss of Rs. 47.22 lakhs.
Dauhlat Ram Trust Scam: 700 bighas of land were sold using forged documents.
Angilaya Housing Society Scam: 7,000 bighas of land were sold through forged high court orders.

Despite the threats and immense pressure from various powerful entities, including bureaucrats, politicians, police personnel, land mafias, and even fellow lawyers, Advocate Suri continued his fight for justice. His dedication extended to his role as Standing Counsel for Nagar Nigam, where he provided his services without charging any fees, aiding the state government in recovering Rs. 17 crores in revenue theft under the Stamp Act.

Tragically, on November 30, 2014, while returning from Nainital after pursuing several writ petitions scheduled for final hearing, Advocate Rajesh Suri was brutally murdered by poisoning. An FIR (crime number 317/2014) was lodged under sections 302/328 IPC against three accused: Advocate Divya Jain, her father Sudhir Jain, and gangster/land mafia Ravi Kant Kriyana. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), under the direction of the Honorable High Court, is currently investigating the matter.

Since the murder, his sister, the Hon’ble Vice President and Trustee of RTI Club Uttarakhand, and an RTI activist, has been tirelessly pursuing justice. She has faced significant challenges in obtaining documents related to her brother’s murder and the associated scams through RTI. Despite these hurdles, she has continued her mission as an RTI activist since 2018, exposing ongoing corruption in various departments of Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand, including the Bar Council of Uttarakhand Nainital, the Education Department, City Corporation Dehradun, the Transport Department (RTO), MDDA, the Uttarakhand Government, and the Khadi Board.

Her dedication to uncovering corruption and advocating for transparency highlights the urgent need for accountability within the system. Despite continuous threats to her life and property, she remains committed to seeking justice for her brother and ensuring that the truth prevails.

Additionally, Advocate Rajesh Suri’s brother, Raj Suri, a businessman, animal lover, and activist, has also been fighting the mafias and the accused tirelessly. The Suri family is stunned by the level of corruption and carelessness of the local police in resolving the notorious murder trail. Raj Suri, who is personally fighting in both the District Court and the High Court, has managed to get the investigation reopened twice. However, the CBI, despite a notification from the Governor of Uttrakhand , has refused to take up the case citing a lack of time, which is unfathomable.

The eldest sister of Advocate Rajesh Suri, Mrs. Rekha Madan, wife of a Brigadier General, has not come out of the shock of losing her brother for the past ten years. She misses him tremendously, as he was a huge pillar of support for her and the entire family.

After ten years, justice for Advocate Rajesh Suri remains elusive. The family’s only hope lies in the judiciary to ensure a fair trial and bring the culprits to justice. This case underscores the necessity of protecting those who stand against corruption and the importance of a transparent and accountable system.
