New Delhi: According to the 2022 report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the highest number of cases of sexual harassment were registered in the capital Delhi. Besides, Delhi is also ahead in cases of violence at workplaces. The shocking statistics of 2022 on sexual harassment at workplace show that 19 cases were reported in Delhi, while 15 were reported in Mumbai, nine in Hyderabad and eight in Bengaluru. Despite the seriousness of the issue, hesitancy among victims to report incidents of sexual harassment has also been observed.
According to NCRB data, sometimes even after women muster the courage to complain, they face great difficulty in getting action taken, especially if a very senior person is involved. For example, in May this year, the Delhi government’s Directorate of Education initiated disciplinary proceedings against a vice-principal at a government school in the city following complaints of sexual harassment by some female teachers. However, the action came after Delhi Women’s Commission received several complaints of sexual and mental harassment against the head of a boys’ school in Kadipur area of the national capital.
According to the According to the DCW, the complainants had said that the accused had sexually and mentally harassed the school teachers and the teachers had also filed several complaints against him with higher authorities, but to no avail. Furthermore, the DCW also learned that an FIR was also lodged against the said accused by another woman in 2022. Sexual harassment in the workplace causes significant harm that serves as a clear manifestation of gender discrimination in the professional environment. It also represents a violation of the fundamental rights enshrined under Article 19 of the Constitution, which erodes equality and jeopardizes the physical and psychological well-being of workers., the complainants had said that the accused had sexually and mentally harassed the school teachers and the teachers had also filed several complaints against him with higher authorities, but to no avail.
